Composite fillings
Thanks to improvements in materials over recent years, the range of indications for direct composite fillings has been considerably extended.
Dentine-adhesive composite restorations
Particularly from an aesthetic point of view, when properly processed they are a cost-effective alternative to laboratory-made restorations. Not only is more healthy tooth structure preserved than with comparable forms of treatment, but the visual design of the filling is also made considerably easier. To achieve optimal results, however, the structure of the natural tooth, made of enamel and dentine, must be imitated with an appropriate layering technique using suitable composite materials. In addition, care must be taken to reproduce the anatomical structures correctly when modelling the surface of the filling. Additional individualisation with intensive colours makes the restoration just as "invisible" as expensive all-ceramic restorations.
For a long time, the use of composite fillings was limited to restorations in the front teeth that are not exposed to chewing pressure, fillings at the necks of the teeth, and small fillings in the back teeth that were also, as far as possible, not exposed to chewing pressure. The hardness of composites has now reached values similar to those of natural tooth structure, which also allows them to be used for fillings that bear chewing pressure.
Our approach
Composite fillings in Düsseldorf
Besides their aesthetics, the greatest advantages of composites are their ability to support tooth structure permanently. They allow an approach that is gentler on tooth structure than all conventional materials.
However, composites are also very demanding, as they do not tolerate the slightest error, which is why making them is considerably more complex and difficult than, for example, amalgam fillings or other direct fillings with plastic materials.
It must therefore be borne in mind that, under given individual circumstances concerning the extent, size and loading of the filling, laboratory-made ceramic restorations can, because of their better physical properties, be a more durable and therefore more reliable form of restoring the tooth, and should be preferred precisely when the technical possibilities of composites are exceeded.
